Bridal Self-care with Essential Oils

If you’ve landed on this blog you might be wondering what essential oils have to do with being a bride. Wedding planning can be a stressful time, and self-care is important now more than ever to keep those stress levels down and that excitement up!

Essential oils for self-care have a wide variety of benefits, which is why I loooove them.
So I wanted to dedicate a little time to them specifically and talk about why you should start adding them to your routine.

Today I’m going to focus specifically on aromatherapy and why you should include it in your bridal self-care process. Aromatherapy can be a great place to start, especially if you’re new to the idea of essential oils. But first, let’s talk for a sec about what essential oils even are.

Essential oils are basically the essence of a plant. They’re typically steam-distilled or, in the case of many citrus oils, (lemon, orange, lime, etc.) cold-pressed. While it can take several pounds of a specific plant to create one bottle of essential oil, the result is pure and potent with the ability to aid in a number of things. Most essential oils share these components: they’re anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and anti-fungal. They’re also great additions to your beauty and skincare routines if you’re interested in opting for a more non-toxic approach. Some can even instill a sense of serenity, which is why I want to talk about them for wedding planning specifically!

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways. They can be applied topically, often diluted with a carrier oil, to provide relief to aches and pains or bug bites, repair damaged skin, or serve as a toner. Aromatically they can promote restful sleep or lower blood pressure. Some essential oils can even be taken internally.

Aromatherapy has been used for centuries. Beyond just smelling amazing, essential oils are effective because when inhaled the scent molecules travel from the olfactory nerves to the part of the brain that controls our emotions, the amygdala. Pretty cool, huh?

Before I get into some of my favorite oils, let’s shift for a moment and talk about self-care. Friends, planning a wedding can be so stressful. As your wedding planner, I make it my mission to remove some of that stress off of your shoulders. But that doesn’t diminish the fact that bridal self-care is still important during this process. Wedding planning can be physically and emotionally taxing and there are a variety of ways you can take care of yourself during this time.

Here are a couple of oils to add to your routine today.

Lavender.

Lavender is a one-oil wonder. It’s calming and relaxing, lowers blood pressure, and promotes restful sleep. It also works wonders in healing damaged skin. It’s ultra-moisturizing and safe enough to be applied directly to the skin without dilution, making it a perfect addition to your skincare routine. Just make sure to test a little on your hand first to make sure you don’t have any kind of reaction. Try adding a little to your bath or diffusing some at night as you’re getting ready for bed. You can also make a little roller to keep with you while you’re on the go!

Frankincense

Frankincense is an amazing oil for hormone support. A lot of people utilize yoga and meditation to help calm feelings of restlessness or promote relaxation and a sense of peace. If you’ve been using yoga to help bring a little calm to all of this wedding planning excitement, try diffusing a little frankincense too.

Orange / Lemon / Bergamot

Citrus oils are known for their mood-boosting properties and are perfect for diffusing at home. An added benefit is that they just make everything smell so clean and fresh! Diffusing or inhaling orange, lemon or bergamot can help with feelings of anxiety or depression.

Ylang-Ylang

Ylang-Ylang means “flower of flowers”. Traditionally the flowers were placed on the beds of newlywed couples on their wedding night. Of course, that’s not what I’m talking about here, but ylang-ylang oil has been known to promote thick, shiny, and lustrous hair when added to hair formulas and treatments. When used aromatically, Ylang-ylang can improve focus, combat anger, and increase positive energy… all things that are important when planning your big day!
