In about a month I will be traveling to California to visit my grandmother. She is turning 90 years old. Yeah. It is kind of a big deal. I want to celebrate her during this time.
What is an even more big deal is the fact that all my children are going with me. All five the kids will meet their great-grandmother, four boys and one sweet girl. They will celebrate her with me.
But wait! There is more.
We are all flying there to visit her. On Frontier airlines. Yeah. That means only a carry on each. No checked luggage or extra bag. They all can only bring one backpack. We will be there for two weeks.
That is where this series comes in. I thought it could be helpful to document my strategy of traveling with all five kids on a budget and with an airline that allows only the bare minimum at a low cost. And for visiting southern Cali for two weeks.
My three youngest have not flown before. And when I did the math it was cheaper for us to fly on Frontier then to drive for 2 days, spend money on 2 nights at hotels and all the gas and food to get us there and back. I am thankful for the minimalist option to fly with Frontier. This is what has allowed for my family to make the trip on a plane versus a car.
I did pay extra for myself to have one checked bag. That should be sufficient for most of our clothes. My concern is my oldest has man sized clothes. But it’s Cali and I am hoping shorts and hoodies and flip flops will be efficient enough clothing for the boys. Ruthie and I can wear dresses the whole time.
And everything washes. We will be staying with family mostly so a washer and dryer will be available.
But should I pack the clothes on their carry-on's or should I just pack stuff for them to do?
I am thinking I will pack a few backpacks with just clothes and few with stuff to do on the plane. And if I roll everything and use my space wisely it should all work out.
But then what kind of things should I pack for them to do? I know my little girl will need screen time. The boys will love looking out the window and the business of the airport. But what else is best for being busy on a 2.5 hour flight?
Check out the next post to see what I decided to bring in the electronic carry on and how I packed all their clothes in 4 backpacks.
